George Maude was a member of the RCAF, Stationed at Patricia Bay during the war. Following the war's end, Maude purchased two Bristol Bolingbroke bombers and a Curtiss P-40E fighter from the government. All three were barged to his family farm on Salt Spring Island were they remained untouched for several decades. One of the Bolingbrokes was donated to the National Aviation Musuem in Rockcliff, ON while the other was sold to a local friend of Maude. It too later became part of a museum, this time the local BC Aviation Museum in Sidney, BC.

The P-40E returned to the Victoria airport in the 1970s were it was given some minor repairs. It remains almost completely untouched since the time it was purchased from the government, although Maude has replaced items such as the machine guns and gun sight as these were removed prior to its sale.
