Welcome to Volume 20 (February 28, 2010)

Its time to make your desires known!!!

FIRE UP YOUR EMAIL, FAX AND PHONE: To let Calgary's aldermen know what you want. As was reported by the press over the weekend, this Wednesday morning city administration is making a recommendation that the city fund, from an exisiting reserve fund, the full museum quality static restoration of the Mosquito and Hurricane. PLEASE immediately email, phone or fax our aldermen urging them to vote yes to this recommendation. If it is still active you can reach all the aldermen at alderweb@calgary.ca If it is not working, or if you want to target the committee members who will be voting on Wednesday morning, you can find their contact information here MAKE SOME NOISE! Write more than once over the next two days. Ask friends to chip in. Forward this to people who may wish to help. We are fractions of a millimeter from complete victory! Heading the Committee is Alderman McIver, Vice Chair Ceci, as well as Aldermen Chabot, Colley-Urquhart, Hawkesworth, Mar, Stevenson, and Mayor Bronconnier. McIver and Mar have strongly supported us in the past. The recommendation of this committee then goes to full council.

Please let them know how you feel and what you would like to see. Perhaps remind them that at the public consultation of Calgarians last January that 84% favoured keeping and restoring both airplanes. Their own Heritage Authority advised keeping and restoring both. This is the last authentic remaining airplane of Spartan's fleet and representative of the cutting edge aerial photo mapping work done by Canadians. Our purpose too is to HONOUR and to EDUCATE. Remind them of the Freddie story and of those who served and sacrificed in WWII. Come from you heart with what is true for you. We need to counter the naysayers who fear spending the money and to urge council to do the highest good.

COME TO THE MEETING ON WEDNESDAY. Its open to the public. Bring a friend. Lets have a show of support in numbers. Bring a few friends. Its at 9:30 a.m. in the basement of old City Hall in the Engineering Traditions room. Just ask a commissionaire when you get there. Members of the public are allowed to speak at the meeting. Do so if you wish. Remember our purpose: RETAIN, RESTORE, HONOUR and EDUCATE.

OUR THANKS TO MEMBER PAT ANDERSON who spoke at our Annual General Membership meeting on Feb. 17, relating to us his experiences of being a Mosquito navigator with 410 Squadron. Pat's presentation was very well received by members and gave us a rare glimpse into 'what it was like'. Thank you Pat for the presentation and even more so for your service to this country.

AT THE AGM we enjoyed a respectable turnout and all members of the board stood and were re-elected. We also welcome Jack McWilliam to the board. Jack has been our #1 recruiter of new members and is well connected in the corporate aviation sector as well as having visited with the good folks at the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Center - home of the prototype Mossie. Welcome Jack.

THANKS ALSO to BOB BOLIVAR, former Spartan navigator and photographer, and the only person we know with actual time on our Mosquito. At the last meeting of the Ottawa chapter of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society guest speaker Norman Avery launched his new book "Spartan, Seven Letters That Spanned the Globe". Bob used this opportunity to inform the gathering of our organization and its efforts with an eight minute presentation. Thank you Bob.

NORMAN AVERY'S BOOK about the company that operated our Mosquito can be ordered through www.lulu.com for $26.24 US, all taxes and delivery included.

Make some noise in the right quarters. Show up Wednesday if you can. Look for a Bytes later on Wednesday to let you know what happened.

Its in our hands to get it done. Now.
