Welcome to Volume 14 (July 12, 2009)

HELP, PEOPLE AND TENT REQUIRED! We hope your summer is going well. Our Mosquito Society is busy waving the flag and signing up new members at a number of venues and events and we need your help. We need people to help staff our display at the following events:

  • 2009 COPA National Convention at the Springbank Airport July 17-19.
  • Airdrie Air Show, July 22
  • Lethbridge International Air Show, July 25 & 26
  • Nanton Lancaster Society's "Remembering Baz" Day, August 15
A weekend, a day or even a few hours helps. Please call or email me back if you can help at any of these events.

For the Air Shows at Airdrie and Lethbridge we need to supply our own tent. One of those little 4 cornered 10x10' sort of things. Got one? Know someone who does? Help!

CALL OR EMAIL IF YOU CAN HELP: 403-235-1350, deboerr@telusplanet.net

THANKS TO: All of those members (Barry, Sean, Scott, Stephane, Bob, David, Tim, Robyn, Tricia, Keith) who helped put our display together and staff it at Nanton's 'Planes, Trains and Elevators' day, the Harvard Historical Aviation Society's 'Air Affair 'at Penhold last month, at Springbank for the 'Back to Baddeck' relay and Nanton again for the 'Tribute to Jon Spinks' day.

Thanks also to the hosting organizations for partnering up and providing space and opportunity: the Nanton Lancaster Museum, the Harvard Historical Aviation Society and the AVRO Museum. These events have been very effective in increasing our membership and our public profile.

NEXT GENERAL MEETING: Will be held on Wednesday, September 16 at the Phoenix Foundation, #1, 2821 - 3 Ave. N.E. Its summer; Lets take a break from the formal meeting stuff. But be sure to attend September's new season kick off. In addition to handling business, board member Bob O'Connor will be talking about his wartime experiences as a Mosquito navigator.

OUR FIRST ARTIFACT! Stay tuned for exciting news about our very first artifact acquisition. I was contacted by an old associate from the early days of the founding of the Aero Space Museum who asked if we were interested in acquiring a certain, almost sacred, relic. Will let you know when it is in our posession.

THANKS DUE ALSO: To members Roy Riddle and Jack McWilliam for doing a great job in getting the word out and signing up new members to the society. Thank you both for taking the intitiative and turning in some great results!

Again, if you are receiving this but have not yet signed up, we invite you to do so.

RICHARD DISCOVERS THE JOY OF FREE FILE SHARING WEBSITES: The May 8 presentation of the F for Freddie story was filmed and is available on the net at: http://www.filefront.com/13963913/undefined The presentation runs about 90 minutes. Depending on your connection speed, it takes about 50 minutes to download. We are hoping to use this filmed version to get one of our networks to do a full documentary treatment of the story.

STILL WAITING ON THE CITY: As planned the City has contracted with an independant party to examine the Mosquito and Hurricane and advise them on the condition, levels of restoration, costs and time lines. Once this report is in hand later this summer, the City will issue their Request for Proposals, to which we respond and outline our plan for retaining and restoring the Mosquito.

As always, my thanks. Hope you can help out at one of our events.
